Overnight docking in Arkureyri, Iceland (Population 20,000)
Gateway to the famous Godafoss Waterfall
A 8-hour tour covering Godafoss, Dettifoss, Lake Myvatn, etc.
As we sailed through the 47-mile-long Eyjafjörður fjord, we were treated to stunning views before reaching the port of Akureyri. The mountains tower up to 5,000 feet, and there are five villages scattered along the fjord. In addition to the opportunity to spot whales, orcas, and dolphins, you may also catch a glimpse of puffins nesting on the islands in the fjord during the summer months.
The second largest city in Iceland and 56 miles south of the Arctic Circle, Akureyri is the capital of the north. It's a great place to experience the midnight sun during the summer and northern lights during the winter.
Docked overnight in Akureyri, the ship sailed out of the fjord the next morning at 11 am, heading towards Reykjavik, the Capital of Iceland. We had the entire day before sailing to go on the Diamond Circle excursion, visiting the breathtaking Godafoss waterfall, the powerful Dettifoss waterfall, and several other interesting sites.
